Decorating My Husband’s Office

How many of you are embarrassed to walk into your Husband’s office at work?  My husband always keeps a neat and tidy office so I can’t say I was embarrassed but, it was never really decorated per say.  He had some family pictures and his crystal trophy awards sitting around and it wasn’t bad but, it just wasn’t great either.  When his company recently relocated their office to a new building and his new office is now the first office when you come in, we both decided it was time to spruce up the blank slate.

Husband Office Decorating

You have to know your husband before you start on this adventure.  My husband knows what he likes and doesn’t like. I realized right away I was his assistant in this and I was not the one in charge. We accessed what he needed for his new office.  He obviously had a big blank wall to fill.  He wanted to display his family pictures and he needed a place to put all his awards. He also likes simple décor with clean lines.  I am calling his style simple modern professional casual.

I knew Ikea was a great place to start but, it can be overwhelming and take all day to get through the store.  I had him go on the website and pick out a few things he liked so we would know what to look for when we got to the store.

When we went to the store to compare and see the size in person. This tall skinny bookcase ended up being the perfect fit to house all his trinkets and trophies he has been given. We loved the legs on it and design of it for a small bookshelf.

After walking through the show room of Ikea you have to walk through the Market Place before you can get to the warehouse and purchase your furniture.  This can be overwhelming!  We needed to pick out a lamp and some other accessories for his office.  We picked out a gray lamp, the wall shelves, a couple of metal lanterns and he insisted on the little green plants for his bookcase. He had seen them on display and obviously really liked them. One good thing of walking through the show room is seeing how to arrange accessories and which ones you like.

It took half the day to get through that store.  I love going to Ikea but, it can be sensory overload seeing all the great home décor stuff!

Over the next couple of weeks I collected things around the house that I wasn’t using that I thought he might like as well.  I found these extra black frames I had bought at Ikea for our home but had never put to good use.  I find my husband loves pictures of his family at his office so, supply your husband with frames and pictures of his family.  It helps remind them of why they work so hard when they are having a stressful day. I need to get some new updated pictures but, these will do for now. We brought everything down to the office and had several date nights arranging and hanging everything.  We decided on the shelves being staggered to fill up more of the wall. The family pictures and books gave the pop of color with all the gray and black in the office.

I had picked up the pillows and a clock at Ross.  The comment I got was “I am not sure I can do pillows” and yet they ended up staying and he really likes them. It softens up the chairs and provides a touch of comfort like home plus it helps tie in the bright blue around the front hallway window. He took back the clock I bought and picked out a different one true to his style. He also picked up the blue vase with the lighted branches for the corner of his office.

He has been working from home during the construction of the new office which unfortunately has been several months.  He has been very anxious to get back into his office and have his own space to work with out dogs barking, kids busting through the door at 3 pm, yelling during conference calls and feeling like he works out of boxes in the back of his car.  We took the kids to go see his office and they left him several endearing notes on the other big wall in his office…his white board wall…

I highly recommend the white board wall in any home or office!  They have big sheets of white board at home improvement stores for around $11 or you can find white board wall paper or paint…we have one in our home to and everyone enjoys it!

My husband has received lots of compliments on how great his office looks.  Not many others have done anything to their offices but, knowing my husband he wanted to start off the new year ready to go! He has his eye on earning another one of those pretty glass trophies which means we get a nice family vacation!
